The Voluptuary
Matty Dread and the Troubled Loners
voluptuary: noun: a person addicted to luxury and pleasures of the senses adjective: furnishing gratification of the senses - One Look Dictionary
It's always about our human story: love and death, built-in tragedy, have a good chuckle after you smash your finger in the car door - just ask Joseph Campbel labout heroes. What size shoes wear feet of clay? Tall tales told with more truth than fact, more rhythm than truth, and more color than the eye can see. And a man is just a man, until he dreams. Uncle Dread has come to visit, and brought with him his friends and relations; mostly pleasant enough, but, a few unsavory characters tag along. Some are camping in my backyard, some are staying in the attic, unexpected and unnerving. Sister Mary lurks behind the kitchen door- what did she overhear? Hot, god it's hot in here.A rogue's gallery is still a gallery; mixed media, folk art, gas station gift shop deep in the Mojave. Huge white walls and academic edifice, pristine thought rendered in broken crayola. Exquisite sadness, torturous ennui as we travel Next Gas Next Food Next Lodging galactic distance from here - put The Dread in the CD player and drive like a maniac: Wir fahren fahren fahren auf der Autobahn. I remember Harry's hat, John's folly. I've heard about Ms. Page my entire life, short and incriminating though it be. Hope and Charity didn't show up this trip, perhaps they listened to Track One and decided they've had enough of this sh*t, "Let's bug out to Argentina and pursue silvery dreams. Maybe England, Kent, Grey Dawn." Maybe this is all about tea in the kitchen and kicking the sane and boring lifeless down the stair. Maybe it's not. Maybe it's about despair or suicide, the self-immolation of the best and brightest, but I think it's more about those unabashed - the unapologetic: the makers the poets the teller of tales the doers of science and the everyday magic of the heart - Human spirit as condition, not being. What have we made here, now, in this life? We've become The Voluptuary and I'm still a Troubled Loner.
